♦ Bot. Disposition des feuilles ou des pièces florales dans le bourgeon, qui indique la préfoliation ou la préfloraison.

BOT., vieilli. Disposition propre aux nouvelles feuilles dans le bourgeon ou aux nouvelles enveloppes florales dans le bouton. Synon. préfloraison, préfoliation. Les feuilles (...) dans le bourgeon, y sont en général diversement pliées ou roulées sur elles-mêmes (...). On a nommé cet état préfoliaison, ou plus anciennement vernation (...) état printanier (A. DE JUSSIEU, Cours élém. d'hist. nat., Bot., 1884, p. 125).
Prononc.:[]. Étymol. et Hist. 1826 (Dict. des sc. nat., Strasbourg, F.-G. Levrault, t. 43, p. 265, s.v. préfloraison). Empr. au lat. des botanistes vernatio « disposition des feuilles dans le bourgeon, avant leur développement » (LINNÉ, voir A. DE JUSSIEU, op. cit., p. 251), lat. class vernatio « mue (des serpents) au printemps; mue en général », dér. de vernus « printanier » (vernal). Vernation est att. en angl. dès 1793 (NED).
